The 2020 BMW 218i M Sport Gran Coupe has a few unusual tricks up its sleeve for an entry-level BMW. Its 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder B38 engine produces 103kW and 220Nm, with peak torque available from just 1,480rpm. Even more interestingly, the B38 engine family was also used in the BMW i8, where the three-cylinder engine was mounted transversely in the middle of the car as part of its plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 218i itself uses the same basic modular engine philosophy, with BMW designing its engines around roughly 500cc per cylinder.
The 2 Series Gran Coupe was also a significant departure from traditional BMW architecture. Rather than using the rear-wheel-drive platform associated with many of BMW's compact cars, the 218i uses BMW's UKL2 front-wheel-drive architecture, shared with models including the 1 Series, X1, X2 and several MINI products. Despite its relatively compact dimensions, it offers a 430-litre boot, while the M Sport specification adds features such as 18-inch wheels, M Sport suspension and an M aerodynamic body kit. BMW quoted 0-100km/h in 8.7 seconds and combined fuel consumption of around 5.9L/100km, making this small Gran Coupe an interesting blend of BMW styling, technology and a remarkably small three-cylinder engine.Buy from Australia's largest Wholesaler of Prestige cars.
