The 2016 BMW M4 is notable for being the first generation to carry the M4 name, separating the two-door performance model from the M3 sedan. Under the bonnet is BMW's S55 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, producing 317kW and 550Nm, with the 7-speed M-DCT dual-clutch transmission capable of launching the M4 from 0-100km/h in around 4.1 seconds. Unlike the naturally aspirated V8-powered M3 that preceded it, the M4's turbocharged engine delivers its peak 550Nm from just 1,850rpm and maintains it through to 5,500rpm, giving the car strong acceleration across a remarkably broad rev range.
One of the M4's most distinctive engineering features is its carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic roof, designed to reduce weight high in the car and lower its centre of gravity. BMW also used carbon fibre in other structural components, while the M4 received an electronically controlled Active M Differential and specially tuned suspension to help put its rear-wheel-drive performance to the ground. Another interesting detail is that the M4 was among BMW M's first cars to use electric power steering, specifically calibrated for the model.
