The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric AWD holds a special place in Volvo history as the brand's first fully electric production vehicle in Australia. Despite its compact SUV proportions, the twin-motor setup delivers an impressive 300kW and 660Nm, enough to propel it from 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Under the floor sits a 78kWh battery, while one electric motor powers each axle to provide all-wheel drive. One of its more unusual touches is the lack of a traditional start button, you simply get in, select drive and go. It also gains a small front storage compartment, or 'frunk', because there is no conventional petrol engine under the bonnet.
Inside, the XC40 Recharge was also a technological turning point for Volvo, being the first Volvo to use Google-powered Android Automotive infotainment, with Google Maps and Google Assistant integrated directly into the vehicle rather than simply mirroring a smartphone. The minimalist Scandinavian cabin incorporates recycled materials, including recycled-plastic door carpeting, while the electric XC40 retains essentially the same passenger and rear cargo space as its petrol counterpart.
