The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce is particularly significant because it was Alfa Romeo's first production model to introduce electrification, using a clever 48-volt mild-hybrid system rather than a conventional hybrid setup. Its 1.5-litre turbocharged engine is paired with a 15kW/55Nm electric motor mounted directly within the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing the Tonale to start and move away silently on electric power and even travel under electric power at low speeds. The petrol engine also uses a variable-geometry turbocharger, an unusual feature for a small petrol engine that helps broaden its performance across the rev range.
The Veloce is also the more enthusiast-focused version of the Tonale, with several features that distinguish it from the standard model. It gets electronically controlled Dual Stage Valve suspension, allowing the driver to switch between comfort and firmer dynamic damping, along with Brembo four-piston front brake calipers, 19-inch alloy wheels, aluminium paddle shifters and Alfa Romeo's DNA drive modes. Interestingly, Alfa Romeo spent two years testing the Tonale in Australia, specifically helping calibrate its suspension for local roads.
