The 2019 BMW X5 M50d is a particularly rare combination of brute force and diesel efficiency. Its 3.0-litre inline-six uses four turbochargers to produce 294kW and a huge 760Nm, giving this large luxury SUV a 0-100km/h time of just 5.2 seconds, performance that would have been remarkable even among petrol-powered SUVs of the era. Interestingly, the M50d's 760Nm of torque is comparable to the output of much larger high-performance petrol engines, yet BMW achieved it from a relatively compact 3.0-litre diesel.
The M50d also received a much more sophisticated chassis than the regular X5, with M Suspension Professional, including active roll stabilisation, an M Sport differential and rear-wheel steering. Another standout detail is that the M50d came with 22-inch wheels and BMW Laser headlights as standard in the Australian market, giving it a distinctive presence over the standard X5 variants. Despite its performance focus, it remained a genuinely practical SUV, offering five seats, up to 1,870 litres of cargo space and a 2,700kg braked towing capacity.
