The 2017 Lotus Exige S is a fascinating example of Lotus's 'add lightness' philosophy, combining a compact, mid-engined layout with a supercharged 3.5-litre V6 producing 258kW and 400Nm. Underneath, it uses an extruded and bonded aluminium chassis with composite body panels, helping keep weight remarkably low for a car with this level of performance. The engine itself is Toyota-sourced 2GR-FE V6, but Lotus extensively reworked it with a Harrop HTV 1320 supercharger and its own engine management, transforming an engine also found in everyday Toyota and Lexus models into a genuine performance powerhouse.
One of the most unusual aspects of this particular Exige is its 6-speed automatic transmission. Rather than sacrificing performance for convenience, the automatic Exige S was actually claimed to be 0.1 seconds quicker to 100km/h than the manual, thanks in part to its Launch mode, with a quoted 0-100km/h time of around 3.9 seconds. It also features Sport and Race modes, paddle shifters and Lotus's Dynamic Performance Management system, making it a rare sports car that combines supercar-like acceleration with the convenience of an automatic gearbox.
