The GLS 450's 'hybrid' system isn't designed to drive the SUV purely on electric power like a conventional hybrid. Instead, its 48-volt electrical system and integrated starter-generator work behind the scenes to provide extra torque during acceleration, recover energy under braking and make the engine's stop-start operation almost imperceptible.
